Elk grow a new set of antlers as part of their natural annual cycle and eventually shed them. Once collected, naturally shed antlers can be selected, cleaned, cut, and prepared for use as dog chews.

Elk naturally grow and shed their antlers as part of their normal life cycle. Naturally shed antlers can then be collected rather than being produced specifically for use as a dog chew.

    Split antlers are cut lengthwise, exposing the natural interior and giving dogs easier access to the center of the antler. They can be a more approachable option for lighter chewers or dogs that are new to antlers.

How Long Do Antler Chews Last?

That’s one of the reasons people choose them—antlers are naturally durable.

How long an individual Glacier Lake Chew lasts will depend on your dog’s size, chewing style, frequency of use, and the particular antler. A determined chewer may work through a chew differently than a dog who enjoys an occasional gnaw.

Rather than promising a specific number of days or weeks, we recommend regularly checking your dog’s chew and replacing it when it becomes worn, damaged, or too small for appropriate use.

How Do I Choose the Right Size?

Start with your dog, not the antler.

Consider your dog’s size, chewing style, and previous experience with harder chews when selecting a Glacier Lake Chew. The chew should be appropriately sized so your dog cannot easily swallow it or fit the entire chew into their mouth.

When Should I Replace It?

Even a long-lasting chew doesn’t last forever.

Regularly inspect your dog’s Glacier Lake Chew for changes in size and condition. Replace the chew when it becomes excessively worn, damaged, develops concerning edges or pieces, or becomes small enough that your dog could attempt to swallow it.

When in doubt, it’s better to retire an old chew and start fresh. And your dog probably won’t complain about that.

Always supervise your dog while chewing and regularly inspect the antler for excessive wear, damage, sharp edges, or small pieces that could present a choking hazard. Antlers are naturally hard and may not be appropriate for every dog, particularly dogs with dental concerns.
